Diagnosis of Hermetic Compressor

The hermetic compressor is something in which both motor and compressor are present together attached in a single outer welded steel shell, it is also known as a sealed compressor. The hermetic compressors are used in light commercial and residential applications. 

These are the ones which you’re going to have in your refrigerators, your residential air conditioning systems, sometimes up to seven and a half ton or you might have also seen 10-ton hermetic compressors.

Look, if you buy a defective compressor, it might show you some warning symptoms due to different causes, such as;

·         Doesn’t run properly – The possible cause could be the control system which isn’t supplying power to the compressor, or it could also possible because your compressor motor has open windings.

How to make sure? Check the power of compressor, or check the temperature of compressor dome, and check for open circuit in the blower.

·         It hums, but doesn’t pump – Many people often complain of this issue in their hermetic compressors, well it could happen due to the failure of starting components, wrong wiring, or maybe compressor is not getting enough voltage

How to check? Always check the voltage before starting your hermetic compressor, check the wiring of the capacitor, and always check the starting components and compressor windings.

·         Overheats – The overheating of compressor usually occurs due to lack of lack of refrigerant, or excessive super-heating, it could also be due to discharging gas into the dome of the compressor, or winding has been partially shorted

How to check? For lack of refrigerant, you’ll need to check TXW bulb mounting, check the system pressure; if discharging of gas is above 450 PSIG, it means the internal valve is left open.

·         Low capacity – the lower capacity of the hermetic compressor is due to leakage in valves

How to check? Check the amp draw, the high amp draw may indicate the worn parts
